30th Annual McGuire Memorial Conference on Family Violence
The Road to Best Practices
September 26 and 27, 2019
Billings Clinic – Mary Alice Fortin Health Conference Center
This 30th annual conference is presented each year to memorialize Dr Isabel McGuire and her two children, Kate and Jenny, who were all killed in 1989 by Isabel’s second husband.
To open this year’s conference, we have invited a blue-ribbon panel of state and local leaders including: Governor Steve Bullock, Attorney General Tim Fox, County Attorney Scott Twito, County Sheriff, Mike Linder, Mayor Bill Cole, Fire Chief Bill Rash, and Police Rich Chief St John. Each has been invited to make opening comments regarding progress in reducing family violence that they have seen or participated in over the past 30 years and to also comment on the work and challenges that they see still ahead.
Dr. Neil Websdale has been invited to return to the conference to discuss Fatality Review Commissions from the national perspective. He will also speak about Evidence-Based Violence and Threat Risk Assessment (APRAIS) by law enforcement officers.
Speakers are being invited to report on the work of the Montana Infant Child Fatality Review Commission and provide updates on the study of adult and Native American DV fatalities.
Asst. AG Jon Bennion will present information on the progress in the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative. We also plan to shine some light on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Crisis in Montana from the Native American perspective.
Legislator, Kim Dudik from Missoula will return to the conference again this year to provide information on Montana’s recent legislative session and changes in the laws and their impact on children and families, including the passage of the resolution declaring pornography a public health risk.
We will wrap up the two full days with a review of best-practices programming and services. We are inviting some of the key service providers to give brief reports on services and programs that are new and how their important and specialized services are of benefit to children and families in our community.
We will continue to update this information as our planning continues.
Come and join us for two jam-packed days of information and inspiration!
